PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has, with immediate effect, ordered the National Employment Council, the legitimate owners of land in Hopely and Stoneridge, to halt the demolition of houses in the two suburbs following a public outcry.
The directive was announced yesterday by Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, who said the President intervened after being apprised of developments, including images circulating on social media showing homes being pulled down.
“The President saw what was happening on social media and directed me that the demolitions in Hopely and Stoneridge be stopped forthwith,” said Minister Garwe.
At least 54 households in the two high-density suburbs had reportedly been affected by the demolitions, which the NEC said were meant to pave the way for the construction of an industrial project.
Last night, The Herald was informed that no court order was in place authorising the demolition exercise.
Minister Garwe warned that any individuals or entities that defy the Presidential directive would face consequences.
“Government is clear on its stance; no one should have his or her house demolished, and if it happens, please just come and tell us so that we deal with them accordingly,” he said.
Minister Garwe added that the demolitions would be inconsistent with the Government’s development thrust and people-centred policies.
“This is not what the President wants for his citizens and it is ultra vires the direction the party is taking.
“The people are at the centre of development and we do not want to disturb anything that jeopardises our development as a people or as a nation,” said Minister Garwe.
President Mnangagwa’s intervention comes amid heightened concern from residents and civic groups, with some families reportedly left exposed after their homes were demolished.
