ZIMBABWE men’s 4x400m relay team has pushed itself into serious global contention after a sharp rise on the latest World Athletics rankings, giving the country a clear path to the World Athletics Relays in May.
The quartet of Gerren Muwishi, Leeford Zuze, Thandazani Ndhlovu and Dennis Hove climbed from 24th to 13th on the World Athletics Top List following a strong run at the Lefika International Relays in Botswana.
Their time of 3 minutes 00.69 seconds was enough to lift them 11 places and tighten their grip on qualification.
That jump matters. It puts Zimbabwe on course for a second straight appearance at the World Relays, a stage that shapes Olympic qualification cycles and offers rare exposure against the world’s fastest relay teams.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director of coaching, talent identification and development Phakamile Lisimati said the performance confirmed steady progress within the squad.
“It’s quite good news that we are safely in the rankings. We continue to prepare hard for the main competition where we seek to improve on our showing in China. I am very much impressed by the improvement in the time. They are going to perform at the World Relays,” said Lisimati.
Attention now shifts to the World Relays, where maintaining that ranking and sharpening execution will decide how far this group can go against deeper, more experienced fields.
